The Song of Endless Roads

The Song of Endless Roads I. The Beginning The morning stirs with golden breath, A hush before the day is born. The earth awakens, soft and slow, Its heart still trembling from the dawn. I step into the waiting silence, Shoes damp with dew, lungs filled with sky. The road before me bends and whispers, “Walk on, child, don’t ask why.” For every path has secrets hidden, Carved in stone and sung by streams, And those who dare to keep on walking Find their footsteps leading into dreams. II. Voices of the Earth The fields are choirs of quiet wonder, Grass blades hum in emerald rows. The trees hold council in their stillness, Guardians of what the spirit knows. Birdsong bursts like sudden laughter, Rising clear where shadows fade. Each feathered voice a note of freedom, Each trill a hymn creation made. The wind becomes my patient teacher, Tracing stories along my skin. It speaks of journeys without ending, Of worlds that live both out and in. III. The Weight ...

The Clocktower’s Secret

The Clocktower’s Secret

In the heart of Bramblewick, a village often swallowed by fog, there rose an ancient clocktower. Its iron hands marked the hours faithfully, though no one knew who wound it anymore. The villagers claimed it had always turned, that its gears moved by some forgotten magic. Children dared each other to touch its heavy doors, but none ever entered.

Only one man in town seemed fascinated by it: Jonah, a thirty-year-old schoolteacher with restless curiosity. Where others saw a relic, Jonah saw mystery. Each evening, after teaching his pupils, he lingered at the tower’s base, staring up at the shadowed windows.

One autumn night, as the fog thickened, Jonah heard something strange: the tower was humming. It was not the usual grinding of gears, but a melody—faint, like a lullaby played on strings. Heart racing, he pressed his ear against the door. The wood vibrated with rhythm. Before he could think, the door creaked open.

Inside, the air smelled of oil and dust. Shafts of moonlight filtered through cracks, catching motes that danced like tiny stars. A spiral staircase wound upward, vanishing into darkness. Jonah climbed, the hum growing louder with every step.

At the top, he entered the clockroom. Brass gears turned in perfect synchrony, each the size of wagon wheels. But what caught his breath was at the center: a glowing pendulum, swaying slowly, casting silver light across the chamber. And beneath it, a woman sat cross-legged, her eyes closed, her hands hovering as though guiding the pendulum’s swing.

Jonah froze. She was no villager—her hair shimmered pale as frost, and her clothes looked centuries old.

Her eyes opened. They were gray, piercing, and impossibly calm. “You should not be here.”

Jonah stammered, “I—I heard the sound. Who are you?”

She studied him. “My name is Elara. I am the Keeper.”

“The Keeper of what?”

“The Keeper of Time—for this place, for this village, for all who live under its hours.” She gestured to the pendulum. “This heart keeps your world aligned. Without it, days would crumble into chaos.”

Jonah laughed nervously. “That’s impossible. It’s just a clock.”

Elara tilted her head. “Is a heartbeat just a sound? Is a breath just air? Time is fragile, Jonah. More fragile than you know.”

He wanted to scoff, but the air itself seemed to shimmer around her words. “Why me? Why let me see this?”

“Because you were meant to,” she said simply.

Over the next weeks, Jonah returned. Elara never asked him to leave, nor did she explain why he was allowed inside. Instead, she taught him. He learned how the pendulum absorbed fragments of starlight each night, how the gears aligned with the tides, how even a second stolen could unravel futures.

“The tower does not keep time for itself,” Elara said once. “It keeps time for you all—to give order, to give hope. Imagine if hours vanished at random. Crops would wither. Children would never grow. Life would become unbearable.”

Jonah listened, fascinated. Yet he noticed how weary she seemed. Each time he visited, Elara’s glow dimmed a little, as if the years weighed more heavily on her than on anyone else.

One night, storms battered Bramblewick. Lightning flashed, thunder roared, and the tower shuddered. Jonah rushed inside, climbing the steps two at a time. In the chamber, he found Elara struggling—the pendulum flickered, its glow faltering.

“What’s happening?” he shouted.

“The clock is breaking,” she gasped. “Its keeper is fading. I cannot hold it much longer.”

Jonah’s chest tightened. “Then let me help!”

Her eyes softened with sorrow. “To keep the clock, one must surrender their years. Every swing of the pendulum steals a fragment of the Keeper’s life. I have given centuries. My time is ending.”

The pendulum’s light sputtered. The gears groaned, grinding to a halt. Jonah felt the air shift, his own heartbeat stumbling as seconds slipped out of order.

Elara grasped his hand. “The tower chose you. Will you take my place?”

Fear surged in Jonah’s veins. To live here, alone, bound to a pendulum? To watch the world pass without him? But then he thought of his students, the laughter of children in the schoolyard, the warmth of mornings that would cease without time’s steady rhythm.

He nodded. “I will.”

Elara smiled faintly. “Then the hours will endure.”

She guided his hand to the pendulum. Light surged, blinding, filling his lungs with fire and frost. The hum returned, steady, alive. When Jonah opened his eyes, Elara was gone. Only her cloak remained.

He stood in the center, glowing faintly now himself, feeling the weight of each second coursing through him. Outside, the storm calmed. The clock struck midnight. Bramblewick slept peacefully, unaware of what had changed.

Jonah was no longer a teacher, no longer simply a man. He was the Keeper. And as the pendulum swung, he whispered to the silence:

“Time will not fail you.”
